A red card in the 53rd minute proved pivotal in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Girls Under-17 State Open Cup final at Stringham Park in LaGrange, N.Y. June 3.

In this battle between two Long Island Junior Soccer League teams, Brentwood Blaze had the player sent off but then rallied to defeat the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Screaming Eagles, 4-2.

“We woke up after the red card and scored four goals,” Brentwood coach Chris Roche said

Kristin Finery, Amy Lederer, Ashley Lindsay and Fiona Smyth scored Brentwood’s goals.

Brentwood received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. Amoroso, a U.S. Soccer Life Member who died in 2016, started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980. It spread to Eastern New York, nationally and to China and Ireland.

Brentwood will represent ENYYSA at the Region I tournament in Spotsylvania, Va. June 29-July 3.
