HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — So far, so good in the Big Apple.
The Rochester Lady Lancers’ visit to the metropolitan area got off to solid start Saturday night as they defeated the Long Island Rough Riders, 2-1, in United Women’s Soccer action at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
Elin Eklund scored both goals for Rochester, which improved to 2-1-2, while Long Island had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped, falling to 2-2-1. The teams played to a 1-1 draw at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester last week.
The Lady Lancers, who are in third place in the Eastern Conference, will try to make it a weekend sweep as they visit the New York Surf tomorrow at SUNY Maritime College Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Eklund tallied her first goal in the 27th minute before striking against four minutes later. Her second score was assisted by Dori Rizzo. The visitors survived with a 2-0 halftime advantage after LI’s Taylor Elliott hit the post in the 42nd minute.
The Rough Riders pulled one back on a Kayla Saager goal in the 75th minute.
A minute later, Brooke Barbuto nearly added an insurance goal as her attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
