Less than 24 hours after being eliminated from the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, New York City FC suffered another big loss, this time off the field Thursday.

The MLS team announced that midfielder Yangel Herrera will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing a successful arthroscopic ankle procedure.

The 20-year-old Venezuelan international is expected to make a full recovery, the team said.

Herrera was injured in the 3-1 loss to Houston Dynamo May 25 and missed the past two matches.

He is considered one of MLS’ rising young stars as a tough holding/defensive midfielder. Herrera has scored one goal and added five assists in 33 appearances for City.

Herrera was a standout at last year’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup and is on loan to NYCFC from Manchester City.

“Everyone at the club wishes Yangel all the best in his recovery from injury,” the team said in a statement.

NYCFC lost to the Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena Wednesday night, 4-0.
