SYRACUSE — Desperately needing a victory, the Rochester Lancers won their first game of the National Premier Soccer League season Wednesday night, defeating Syracuse FC, 2-1 at Onondaga Community College.
Rafa Godoi snapped a 1-1 tie in the 74th minute for the visitors.
Rochester, which is in fifth place in the Midwest Region’s East Conference Division, improved to 1-2-1 while Syracuse FC fell to 1-4.
“It’s great to get our first win of the season today,” Lancers general manager Marc Mandell said. “Hopefully this will be the catalyst to carry us forward the rest of the way.”
After a scoreless opening half, the hosts got on the scoreboard first as former Rochester Rhino Nate Bourdeau drilled a 25-yard shot into the upper corner.
The Lancers countered with a 64th-minute goal as Will Stone tallied his second goal of the season off a pass from midfielder Ben Allan.
In the 74th minute, Lukas Fermandes fired a shot that was saved, but Godoi slotted home the rebound for what turned out to be the winning goal.
The teams meet again at Marina Auto Stadium in Rochester Sunday, June 17 at 5 p.m.
