SEATTLE – The less said about Sky Blue FC’s 4-1 defeat at Seattle Reign FC Saturday night the better.
The hosts rolled to a 4-1 National Women’s Soccer League victory at UW Medicine Pitch at Memorial Stadium.
The loss left Sky Blue FC (0-4-1, 1 point) winless while Reign FC (4-1-1) improved to 4-1-1.
U.S. international Megan Rapinoe paced Seattle with two goals while Savannah McCaskill had the New Jersey side’s lone score before a crowd of 3,607.
Seattle gained an early advantage in the fifth minute. Rapinoe split two defenders on the left flank to find Stephanie Catley, who one-timed service into the box with her left foot. Jodie Taylor’s ensuing header found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
In the 38th minute, Reign FC stretched the gap to 2-0 after Catley sent a ball into the penalty area that had a deflection to Rapinoe. The U.S. international struck a hard curler into the right upper 90 that simply left goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan with no chance.
Rapinoe registered her second goal in the 60th minute. Nahomi Kawasumi collected in the midfield before delivering service to Rapinoe on the left flank. Rapinoe sped into the box with possession before pulling the ball back to create some space on her defender, firing a shot inside the far post that made it 3-0.
Two minutes later, Sky Blue FC got on the board. Shea Groom started the sequence as she fed McCaskill. The ball went from Katie Johnson to Carli Lloyd, who sent a hard roller to McCaskill as she made a run into the box. McCaskill touched the feed one time before striking a shot over Lydia Williams.
The last goal occurred in the 84th minute. A Reign FC corner kick was played to Rumi Utsugi on top of the 18, where she fired a hard left-footed shot that hit the far post. Northport, N.Y. native Allie Long tapped home the rebound.
Sky Blue FC returns home to Yurcak Field Saturday, May 19, hosting the first-place North Carolina Courage for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
