ERIE, Pa. — In a matchup of two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup debutantes, the Rochester River Dogz lost to Erie Commodores FC in a shootout in a first-round encounter at Gannon University Wednesday night.
Erie recorded a 5-4 penalty-kick win after playing to a 1-1 draw.
The hosts grabbed the lead when Cameron Phillips tallied in the 27th minute.
Rochester, however, equalized just before half. Austin Gerber got behind the Commodores defense and lifted his shot over the goalkeeper for a 1-1 deadlock.
After 120 minutes, Commodores FC prevailed in the tie-breaker, setting up a second-round meeting with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (United Soccer League) back here at Gannon May 16.
The River Dogz are connected to the Rochester Lancers, who play in the National Premier Soccer League.
