Cosmos B forward Darwin Espinal has been named the National Premier Soccer League player of the week, it was announced Friday night.

A native of Honduras, Espinal scored a brace in the team’s 4-0 season-opening win over Boston City FC Sunday.

“I’m happy to receive this award, but I could not have done it without my teammates,” Espinal said.

Espinal joined the Cosmos after spending last season with Reno 1868 in the United Soccer League. He scored twice in 12 appearances. Espinal made his professional debut in 2015 with the Tampa Bay Rowdies as he tallied four goals in 25 appearances for the North American Soccer League side.

“He was excellent for us and played a vital role in our victory,” Cosmos B head coach Carlos Mendes added. “Well-deserved and we hope for even more performances like this from him this season. ”

The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country. It is awarded every week during the regular season.
