El Farolito goalkeeper Mario Martinez has been selected as the fourth National Premier Soccer League player of the week this season, the league announced Friday.
“I am very happy with this recognition, but it was a team effort,” Martinez said.
In his NPSL debut April 7, Martinez made four saves, including a critical save in the 94th minute that sealed El Farolito’s 3-2 road win against Napa. He also recorded a key block on a Napa penalty kick.
“His experience was key in the victory, very happy, but not surprised he got the award,” El Farolito assistant coach Wilfredo Hernandez said.
The Tepatitlan, Jalisco, Mexico native has been with El Farolito for 11 years. He has experience with three Mexican sides: Tecos (Third Division), Real Hidalgo (Second Division) and Atletico del Carmen (Second Division). He also spent time with the San Diego Flash of the A-League.
The winner of this national honor is determined by a vote of media members from across the country.
