Christian Pulisic scored a wonder goal to start Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 home victory over Stuttgart Sunday.
The win helped bury the 6-0 humiliation that Borussia suffered at the feet of Bayern Munich and helped shore up the team’s hopes to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
The U.S. international struck in the 38th minute of the Bundesliga encounter at home as he sent a right-wing cross that banged off the upper right post past a leaping goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler and into the net.
Pulisic tallied his ninth Bundesliga goal, tying him with Jermaine Jones and Eric Wynalda for the fourth most by a U.S. international in the league. The goal was Pulisic’s fourth, which is a season best for him at Borussia.
The Hershey, Pa. native admitted he did not strike the ball the way he wanted.
“That’s true, I didn’t strike it perfectly,” he said. “I actually ‘only’ wanted to send it towards the back post. The fact that it went in is of course a bit of luck. Good for us!”
Michy Batshuayi and Maximilian Philipp also scored for the winners.
“We grew in self-confidence,” Pulisic told the Borussia website. “That made the match much easier.
“Stuttgart played very well in the opening 30 minutes. After the goal we grew in self-confidence. That made the match a lot easier. We played significantly better after the goal.”
