The National Premier Soccer League has announced that F.C. Golden State has joined the league as an expansion team.

The Los Angeles club will compete in the West Region’s Southwest Conference.

“We are excited to see the West Region continue to expand with F.C. Golden State in the Greater Los Angeles market,” NPSL chairman Joe Barone said in a statement. “It’s wonderful to see the NPSL continue to attract such strong organizations as additions to its current footprint in Southern California.”

The leadership of the team will include director of football Alex Lujan and head coach Robert Friedland.

“We have a reputation for running a professional level program and fielding high quality teams,” Lujan said. “We believe this league will allow us to do so earlier in the year with a longer season kicking off in March.”

FCGS will play home games at Rio Hondo College in Whittier, Calif. The soccer-specific facility recently installed a full-sized artificial playing surface.

“Our goal is to compete with the talented teams in the West Region and hopefully have the opportunity to be playing in mid-to-late July in the playoffs,” Friedland said.
