Gonzalo Veron won’t be performing any more late-match heroics for the Red Bulls.
If he agrees to a contract, he will have an opportunity to play for D.C. United.
United Thursday afternoon selected the Argentine forward-midfielder in Stage 2 of the Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft.
The 27-year-old Veron was one of three players picked as the LA Galaxy chose veteran midfielder Servando Carrasco and expansion Los Angeles Football Club tapped midfielder Calum Mallace.
A disappointment for most of his 2 1/2-year Red Bulls tenure, Veron never lived up to his Designated Player status. He finished with 10 goals and four assists in 13 starts and 60 league appearances over 1,729 minutes.
Veron finally found himself this past season, usually as a second-half super-sub, creating or scoring goals. He finished with six goals and three assists in five starts and 24 matches over only 777 minutes.
Despite his production, the Red Bulls did not pick up the 5-8, 155-lb. Veron’s option after the season.
Veron earned a guaranteed salary of $500,000 this past season, according to the MLS Players Association.
The Washington Post reported that Veron was weighing offers from overseas.
“On behalf of everyone at the New York Red Bulls, I’d like to thank Gonzalo for his service to the club,” Red Bulls sporting director Denis Hamlett said in a statement. “We wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”
