With the game on the line, Sam Kerr knew what she had to do — score goals.
The Sky Blue FC striker struck for a seventh-minute hat-trick in the waning stages to help Perth Glory to a 3-3 draw with host Newcastle Jets in a Westfield W-League match at McDonald Jones Stadium Saturday night.
Scoring goals in bunches in late in a game isn’t anything new to the 24-year-old forward as Kerr accomplished that feat in the National Women’s Soccer League this past season. Kerr captured the NWSL Golden Boot and MVP honors in 2017.
With the hosts enjoying a 1-0 lead on an Arin Gilliland goal, Kerr went into action, connecting in the 77th and 82nd minutes to give Perth a 2-1 advantage.
After Katie Stengel pulled one back in the 83rd minute, the Asian women’s player of the year lifted the visitors into a 3-2 edge only a minute later.
Perth, however, could not hold onto the lead as Sarah Carroll equalized for Newcastle four minutes into second-half stoppage.
Perth is in fifth place in the 10-team league with a 4-6-1 mark and 13 points while Newcastle is in second with 23 points via a 7-2-2 record.
