With the announcement of his signing with the Portland Timbers imminent, Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said goodbye to the North American Soccer League Wednesday.
This is what Savarese had to say in a statement:
“It is difficult to express in a few words how much it has meant to me and my family to be part of the New York Cosmos organization. From my first day in August 2010 through today, it has been an incredible journey filled with life changing experiences and adventures. Since the beginning, my main goal has been to honor the past while creating a new future for this historic North American soccer franchise.
“As coach of the NY Cosmos, I treasure the advice I have received from former legends like Pele, Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto. I have drawn inspiration from the daily efforts and sacrifices of my players, technical staff colleagues and the entire front office team, and their never-ending commitment to success. I have been extraordinarily fortunate to work for Rocco Commisso and the previous Cosmos owners who have always demonstrated tremendous faith in my abilities.
“I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart the NY Cosmos fans, especially the 5 Points for their undying support during all these years. It has truly been a tremendous experience.”
The Timbers could announce Savarese’s appointment as early as Thursday.
