CHARLESTON, W. Va. — It might have been an unusual place to hold a derby between a pair of Long Island Division II rivals, but the LIU Post men certainly weren’t complaining.

For the third time in four years, the top-seeded Pioneers captured the NCAA Division II East Region title, defeating second-seeded Adelphi University, 3-0, Thursday night.

In a rematch of last year’s regional final, LIU Post (18-0-2) advanced to the Elite 8, while the Panthers ended their season at 14-3-2.

The game was held here because it was the Atlantic Region’s turn to host this part of the bracket.

Junior Charlie Ledula opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as he took on several defenders and finished for what turned out to be the game-winner.

Only four minutes later, LIU Post doubled its lead. Senior Harry Pearse’s corner kick found Vittorio Argeri, who scored.

The Pioneers grabbed a three-goal advantage in the 65th minute on graduate forward Lukas Ostermann’s 18th goal that was set up by Argeri’s cross.

LIU Post goalkeeper Oliver Hessner Hansen (15-0-2) made six saves and posted his eighth shutout this season.

Adelphi keeper Raymond Leto made three saves.

The Pioneers will take on third-ranked University of Charleston at 1 p.m. at the Golden Eagles’ Schoenbaum Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.

In other action involving the Pioneers, the fourth-seeded LIU Post women (17-3-1) will play at second-seeded Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. in the NCAA Division II East Region Friday at 2 p.m. The winner will advance to the Division II quarterfinals Sunday.

LIU Post defeated Mercy during the East Coast Conference regular season, 2-0, before the Mavericks recorded a 3-0 win in the ECC Championship final.
