BRONX — Joergen Oland scored six minutes into extratime to lift the Fordham University men to a 3-2 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn in the opening round of the NCAA Division I men’s soccer tournament at Coffey Field Thursday night.
Oland scored off a pass from Connor DeFilippis.
The Rams (13-5-2) will meet 11th-seeded University of Virginia in the second round in Charlottesvile, Va. Sunday.
St. Francis had two streaks snapped — its seven-game winning streak and a 10-match unbeaten streak.
Twice Fordham was forced to overcome one-goal deficits.
The Terriers (14-5-1) drew first blood on a Leo Folla goal in the ninth minute off a left-wing cross by Dominick Falanga before the hosts equalized on Jannik Loebe’s 30-yard blast past goalkeeper Robert Bazzichetto in the 72nd minute.
But barely a minute later, St. Francis retook the lead as Nadim Saqui tallied as his shot deflected off goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu.
Fordham, however, was far from finished as it knotted things up yet again in the 81st minute as Matthew Lewis headed home a free kick, setting the stage for Oland’s dramatic heroics.
Nuhu was credited with one save, Bazzichetto two.
