LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Madie Gibson’s goal in the 84th minute was the difference for the top-seeded Monmouth University women as they defeated No. 8 Niagara in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference quarterfinal at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks (13-3-2) dictated the pace and outshot Niagara (7-9-3), 17-3.
“It was a nice team goal and combination from the three forwards,” Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner said. “We did not play our best, but good teams find a way to win and we were able to do that today.”
Junior Jazlyn Moya sent a ball across the penalty area through a number of bodies, where Gibson finished the chance for the decisive score.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Knuab earned her MAAC-leading 11th shutout with two saves.
The Hawks continue play in the MAAC Tournament as they face No. 4 Siena Tuesday at 11 a.m. The game will be played on Field 17 of the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and will be broadcast live on WatchESPN.
