WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University women captured their fifth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 2-0 victory over Fairfield at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn Wednesday night.
Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner was quite pleased with the win and another title.
“A solid performance for us in our final home game of the season,” she said. “We defended well and earned another shutout which is terrific. It is very difficult to be the best team over the stretch of an entire regular season. I am extremely proud of this team for the work they have put in that allowed us to claim our fifth straight regular season championship.”
The Hawks (11-3-2, 8-1-0) got on the board in the 29th minute when Gabriella Cuevas scored her third goal in two games. Cuevas pounced on a loose ball near the far post following a Sarina Jones corner kick.
The hosts outshot the Stags (6-9, 4-5), 14-1 in the opening half.
Monmouth’s lead doubled in the 71st minute when a long shot by Sophie Centi was deflected by Dana Scheriff past goalkeeper Megan DeFeo, who committed to stopping Centi’s low driven shot.
Goalkeeper Amanda Knaub made four saves in the second half to earn her MAAC-leading 10th shutout of the season.
Monmouth closes out its regular season when it visits Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, N.J. Saturday at noon.
