ORLANDO — With its backs to the wall, the United States made sure the World Cup qualifying door did not shut on the team Friday night.

With Jozy Altidore and Christian Pulisic leading the way, the Americans scored a rousing 4-0 romp over Panama in the penultimate game of the CONCACAF Hexagonal.

The result propelled the U.S. (3-3-3 12 points) over Panama (2-3-4, 10) into third place.

A loss would have put the Americans in a precarious position in their quest to qualify for their eighth consecutive World Cup, for Russia 2018.

Altidore, a former Red Bulls striker, tallied twice in the opening half while Pulisic, pulling the strings from the midfield, added a goal and assist at Orlando City Stadium.

The hosts rolled to a stunning 3-0 halftime lead.

With the match only eight minutes old, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder boosted the U.S. into the lead. Goalkeeper Tim Howard started the scoring sequence with a long goal kick. The ball eventually went to Altidore, who headed it on to Pulisic. He split the defense and rounded goalkeeper Jaime Penedo on the right side before depositing the ball into the net.
