PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The St. John’s University women could not hold onto a one-goal lead and dropped a 2-1 Big East decision at Providence College Thursday night.
Senior Mariela Jacome gave St. John’s (5-7-1, 1-3-0) a 1-0 lead with a header in the 23rd minute, but Providence (7-6-0, 2-2-0) responded with two goals in the second half and held off the Red Storm attack.
Providence held a 12-11 shot advantage despite the Red Storm sending six of its shots on target to the Friars’ four. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jordan Kamp made a pair of saves while Shelby Hogan turned aside five shots for Providence.
Junior Christina Bellero and redshirt freshman Zsani Kajan led the attack with a pair of shots each. Bellero assisted on Jacome’s goal to increase her team-leading point mark to 13.
In the 23rd minute, the Red Storm earned a corner kick. Bellero sent the ball into the box but Providence cleared it back out. Bellero gathered the ball on the right side of the pitch and sent a looping cross to the far post that found the head of Jacome, who scored her second goal this season.
In the 58th minute, Kayla Steeves sent a corner kick into the box that found Madison Doherty, who tied the game with a header.
Providence went ahead for good in the 71st minute. Alessandra Arace sent a ball into the box. Casey Estey connected on a header that found the back of the net for the game-winner.
