NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Mamadou Guirassy converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute for the lone goal of the game in the NJIT men’s 1-0 victory at Lipscomb in ASUN Conference action Saturday evening.

The Highlanders improved to a 7-2-2 overall and 2-0 in the ASUN while the Bison fell at 5-5, 1-2.

“We came out very strong and earned our goal,” head coach Fernando Barboto said. “Thereafter we defended for long periods of the game and did so very well. In the end we met our goal, which was to gain three points and get back to getting a shutout on the road.”

Guirassy, the nation’s leading scorer, got the Highlanders on the board with his 11th goal of the season.

The senior forward came close five minutes later beating two Bison defenders and blasting a shot from outside the 18 that was saved by Lipscomb keeper Christopher Zappia.

Highlanders goalkeeper Victor Pujades made six saves, three in the first half. Pujades made a diving save, stopping Ivan Alvardo’s direct kick from 20 yards in the 30th minute.

In the final five minutes, Pujades made a diving save to stop Cameron Botes’ header.

Zappia made three saves.

NJIT will visit Saint Francis U in a non-conference game in Loretto, Pa. Tuesday at 3 p.m.
