HAMDEN, Conn. – Rachelle Ross scored twice in the first half to lead the Monmouth University women to a 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory over Quinnipiac at the Quinnipiac Soccer Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks (7-2-2, 4-0-0) extended three unbeaten streaks. They are undefeated in nine consecutive conference road games (8-0-1, in eight straight matches (7-0-1) and in 18 consecutive MAAC matches (17-0-1) while outscoring their opponents 59-6 during the latter streak.
Qunnipiac (6-5-1, 3-1-1) fell for the first time in the MAAC this season.
Monmouth didn’t waste any time and converted the game’s first chance 70 seconds after the opening whistle. Madie Gibson collected the ball near the corner of the Bobcats’ penalty area and navigated to the end line before sending a cross to the top of the six-yard box. Ross was there to one-time a shot into the upper near corner to make it 1-0.
That was the fastest goal for Monmouth since Oct. 23, 2013 when Julie Spracklin scored 25 seconds into the match at Saint Peter’s.
Gibson and Ross combined again in the 35th minute when Gibson sent a lofted cross from the left side to the far post, where Ross met the pass with a volley that doubled the Monmouth lead.
Monmouth goalkeeper Amanda Knaub finished with three saves to extend her shutout streak to five games.
“This was an excellent performance on the road,” Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner said. “It was a total team effort right from the opening kickoff that led to this win. I am super proud of everyone on this team.”
Monmouth resumes its three-match road trip at Iona College at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
