The choice has been made.

Goalkeeper Ryan Meara will start in the net for the Red Bulls in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup final against Sporting Kansas City, head coach Jesse Marsch announced Monday on the Major League Soccer team’s website.

“We’re all excited for a big opportunity for him and we know he’ll be ready to go,” Marsch said told www.NewYorkRedBulls.com.

Marsch selected the former Fordham University standout over regular keeper Luis Robles, who has started and finish 168 consecutive MLS matches dating back to the 2012 season.

Meara has recorded two shutouts in four Open Cup matches this year. He also registered a penalty kick save against the Philadephia Union to help the Red Bulls advance in the competition.

“Ryan has earned it in how he has played through this tournament,” Marsch said. “This is his tournament to play.

“He’s going to take us through the final and to the trophy.”
