QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s University women dropped a 2-1 decision to Lehigh University at Belson Sunday night.
Annika Jansa converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute after Kayla Arestivo was fouled in the box to snap a 1-1 deadlock.
The Mountain Hawks (4-2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a goal in the eighth minute. The Johnnies (4-2-1) evened the score in the 27th minute, but Lehigh regained the lead early in the second half and held off a late St. John’s push to close out the win.
Lehigh goalkeeper Sam Miller made seven saves. Redshirt freshman Jordan Kamp made one save for St. John’s.
In the eighth minute, the Mountain Hawks earned a free kick in the attacking zone. Sabrina Mertz sent a ball into the box that found the foot of Amanda Stratton. Stratton’s shot was blocked, but Kayla Arestivo cleaned up the rebound, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
In the 28th minute, St. John’s earned a penalty kick after a player was fouled in the box. Junior Christina Bellero sent a shot to the keeper’s left that was stopped. Fellow junior Lucy Whipp swept in the rebound to tie the match at 1-1.
After the visitors took the lead, the Red Storm came close to equalizing in the 87th minute as Bellero earned a free kick. The Johnnies’ leading scorer sent a looping shot from the left side to the far post that the goalkeeper punched off the bar, causing a loose ball near the goal line. Junior Samie Scaffidi got a foot on it, but defenders cleared the ball away.
St. John’s travels to Newton, Mass. to take on Boston College Thursday at 7 p.m.
