FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Senior Danny Cordeiro scored in the second half to lead the NJIT men to a 1-0 victory at Sacred Heart University in the season opener for both teams at Park Avenue Field Friday afternoon.

The Highlanders (1-0) outshot the Pioneers (0-1), 17-2.

In the first half alone, NJIT tallied 11 shots with five of them coming from senior Mamadou Guirassy. Guirassy finished with a game-high seven shots.

The tie was broken in the 52nd minute when Cordeiro finished a pass through the middle from freshman Marcus Agnolin.

NJIT sophomore goalkeeper Victor Pujades posted the shutout. He set the NJIT Division I record for shutouts in a season in 2016 with seven.

SHH keeper Robert Strain earned four saves.

The Highlanders take on Navy in Annapolis, Md. Sunday at 7 p.m.
