UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Senior Danny Elliott scored in the seventh minute to lead the Hofstra University men to a 1-0 win over Penn State at Jeffrey Field Friday night.

Hofstra (1-0) earned its first victory over the Nittany Lions (0-1) improving to 1-1-1 all-time against Penn State.

Elliott got the ball at the left edge of the 18-yard box, made a move around a defender and sent a blast into the top right corner to give the Pride the lead.

Junior goalkeeper Alex Ashton tied a career high with five saves, including a handful of highlight-reel stops to keep the Nittany Lions off the board and earn his first career solo shutout.

Freshmen Matthew Vowinkel and George O’Malley earned starts in their collegiate debuts. Storm Strongin, Marc Rodriguez and Andrea Codispoti also made their debuts, coming off the bench.

The Pride, which has won three consecutive season openers, heads to No. 6 Maryland for a 7 p.m. game Monday.
