BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Monmouth University women team opened their season with a scoreless draw against Lehigh at Ulrich Sports Complex Friday night.
The match was delayed an hour due to thunderstorms.
The two sides were scoreless at halftime thanks in large part to a clear off the line by Monmouth’s Jackie Louro in the 39th minute.
Shots on goal in the match favored Lehigh, 14-8, but the best scoring chance of the night came from Monmouth with two minutes remaining in regulation. Senior Miranda Konstantinides sent a right-footed blast toward the upper corner of the Lehigh goal, but Sam Miller was there to deflect the attempt wide.
“We competed for 110 minutes which is something that has been missing in training,” Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner said. “There was adversity we had to deal with as far as the delay and being on the road for our third straight match. We will look to regroup quickly as we play a nationally ranked opponent Sunday.”
Five Monmouth players made their collegiate debuts, including Jackie Louro, who made her first-career start on Monmouth’s back line.
The Hawks resume their three-game road trip when they meet Rutgers at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J. Sunday at 2 p.m.
