Danny Szetela is poised to join an exclusive club Saturday night, when the Cosmos welcome Indy Eleven at MCU Park in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The veteran midfielder has made 99 regular-season appearances with the club. If he start or comes off the bench Saturday, Szetela will join Carlos Mendes, Ayoze and Jimmy Maurer as Cosmos who have played at least 100 games in the modern North American Soccer League era.
On paper, the game could very well be a high-scoring affair as both squads are among the top four highest-scoring teams in the league. The Cosmos are tied for second with 27 goals, Indy fourth with 25.
Midfielder Emmanuel Ledesma, who has tallied six of those 27 goals, was named winner of the NASL play of the week. He connected for the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with FC Edmonton last Friday. The Argentine fired a shot from outside the penalty area into the upper 90 in the 66th minute.
Ledesma and defender Darrius Barnes were named to the NASL team of the week.
Saturday’s game is Marcos Senna Night as the former Cosmos and Villarreal midfielder and ex-Spanish international, will attend the match. He was the team’s most important player as it won Soccer Bowl crowns in 2013 and 2015. Senna recorded 13 goals in 55 games that spanned regular season and postseason games.
