QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s University women kick off their regular season, traveling to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on LaSalle in a non-conference game slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday.

Led by a group of 15 upperclassmen, an experienced Red Storm squad looks to build on an 11-win season in 2016, the program’s fourth successive season with 10 or more wins. Head coach Ian Stone begins his 24th campaign as the leader of the Johnnies and he’ll be looking to a core of veteran leaders to take charge throughout the 2017 campaign.

The Big East released its preseason accolades last week and the Red Storm was well-represented, as two players were honored with the designation of Preseason All-Big East. Seniors Shea Connors and Allie Moar, who were two of nine players to play in all 20 games last season, were among those selected to the Preseason team.

The Johnnies were selected to finish fourth in the league by the conference’s coaches.

LaSalle returns the team’s second-leading scorer from a year ago in Kristin Haugstad, who recorded two goals and six assists for 10 points. Senior defender Paige McDowell was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team. McDowell was on the 2014 Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team and All-Rookie squad. Coming off a 2016 season that saw the Explorers finish with a 2-4-4 record in the A-10, the league’s coaches predicted La Salle to finish 10th out of 14 teams in the conference.

Friday night will be the fourth meeting all-time between the Red Storm and Explorers. St. John’s has come out victorious in the previous three meetings, the last coming last season, when it defeated LaSalle, 1-0, at Belson Stadium.

Following Friday night’s match, the Red Storm returns to Queens on Tuesday, Aug. 22, for a game with Marist.
