CHICAGO – North Carolina Courage midfielder Samantha Mewis Tuesday was voted the National Women’s Soccer League player of the week by the NWSL Media Association.

Mewis, 24, played all 180 minutes of the Courage’s two matches last week – helping the team to a 1-0 road victory over FC Kansas City Thursday before scoring both goals in a 2-1 away win against the Seattle Reign FC as North Carolina became the first road team to win at Memorial Stadium since May 2016 and snapped a 15-game home unbeaten run by Seattle.

The two victories pushed the Courage five-points clear at the top of the table with 12 wins on the season – tied for third most in a single season in NWSL history. With their next win, Carolina will tie the 2015 Seattle Reign FC for second behind the 2014 Seattle Reign FC, which holds the season record with 16 wins.

The Weymouth, Mass. native opened the scoring against the Reign in the 24th minute after Jessica McDonald centered the ball for Lynn Williams to tee up Mewis to crush a half-volley past the diving hands of goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer.

The U.S. international then scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute following a long throw-in from Ashley Hatch that Mewis directed toward goal with her head. The initial flick was only half cleared by the Reign defense and Mewis was there to seize on the opportunity as she shaped a low shot inside the near post. (Watch highlights)

The UCLA product has played every minute this season and has four goals and three assists on the year. She has scored or assisted on four game-winning goals (two goals, two assists) this campaign.

It is the first time Mewis has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week as well as the first time a North Carolina Courage player has won the award.

North Carolina returns to action in the NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 3:30 p.m. ET against the Washington Spirit at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
