COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The St. John’s University men dropped their preseason opener, 2-1, to the sixth-ranked University of Maryland Terrapins at Ludwig Field Friday afternoon.

“It was a good preseason game,” Red Storm head coach Dr. Dave Masur said. “I was glad to see a lot of our younger players perform well against tough competition and now we have to build from there going forward.”

The Red Storm fell behind early, as goals from Miles Stray and DJ Reeves gave the Terps a 2-0 lead after 45 minutes.

The Johnnies answered in the 63rd minute as junior Mauricio Rivas found the back of the net on assists from 2016 Big East all-freshman team selection Alistair Johnston and freshman Rafael Bustamante.

The Red Storm returns to action, squaring off agaisnt the University of New Hampshire in the second of three exhibition matches at Belson Stadium at 4 p.m. Monday.
