QUEENS, N.Y. — The St. John’s University women defeated Fordham, 1-0, to begin exhibition play at Belson Stadium Wednesday night.
Freshman Maia Cabrera tallied the lone goal of the match.
The Johnnies dominated possession and outshot Fordham, 12-3, as the two teams played three 30-minute periods under the lights.
After a slow start to the action, redshirt junior Maria Gonzalez Bullon got off 52o shots, one that was blocked and one that went wide, with just over four minutes left in the opening period.
In the second period, the Red Storm picked it up offensively. Junior Lucy Whipp and redshirt freshman Zsani Kajan had shots blocked before Cabrera ripped a shot from just outside the box off a feed from junior Claudia Cagnina. Cabrera’s left-footed shot hit the bottom of the cross bar and bounced down over the line, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 advantage.
Later in the period, Cabrera sent another shot on goal that missed by inches as the strike banged off the post.
The Rams had a few opportunities in the middle period, connecting two shots that the St. John’s defense blocked as the Johnnies continued to showcase a defensive back line that was one of the nation’s best a year ago.
Next up for the Red Storm is a clash with Penn State Saturday as the Johnnies suit up for their final preseason match before the start of the regular season. The campaign officially kicks off when the teams travels to Philadelphia to take on La Salle Friday, Aug. 18.
