COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew SC Monday announced it had waived midfielder Dilly Duka.

The Montville, N.J. native made 15 appearances and five starts and recording one goal and one assist in 2016, his second stint with the club after playing with Crew from 2010-2012.

Duka, 27, made only appearance this season as he came on as a substitute in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup loss to FC Cincinnati last month.

In eight Major League Soccer seasons with Columbus, the Chicago Fire and Montreal Impact, Duka appeared 138 times (95 starts) and has recorded 12 goals and 14 assists.

“Dilly and I have had a number of conversations throughout the year about his position on the team and his desire to earn additional match minutes,” Crew head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter said. “After exhausting our options in the trade market, we decided that waiving him was in the best interest of the player and the club. We appreciate Dilly’s contributions since joining the club and wish him success in the next step of his career.”

Duka’s salary of $175,000, according to the MLS Players Union, is guaranteed through this season. Columbus will have to pay for the remainder of his salary if he is not acquired by another team.
