Gonzalo Veron hasn’t scored many goals during his disappointing tenure with the Red Bulls, but he tallied a doozy last week.

The Argentine midfielder-forward struck for the game-winning goal in New York’s 3-2 road win at the New England Revolution Wednesday and was named winner of the FrontRowSoccer.com goal of the week Monday.

Veron was honored for the week ending on Sunday, July 9.

He became the first Red Bull to win this honor since May 29, when Bradley Wright-Phillips was selected for the second successive week.

As it turned out, Veron replaced BWP in the 83rd minute of Wednesday’s encounter at Gillette Stadium.

Seven minutes later he was celebrating his first goal of the Major League Soccer season as cracked a 16-yard shot off a Felipe feed from atop the right side of the penalty area past goalkeeper Cody Cropper.

“It says a lot that we put him in that game at the end, because we still feel like he’s a guy who can make plays and is an important guy,” Red Bulls head coach Jesse Marsch said last week. “For him personally, I know he cares about this team so much and for him to make a big play, I think he’s in a good way. It’s a proud moment for him.”

It was Veron’s fifth goal in 44 league appearances since joining the Red Bulls in 2015.
