It seems like everything that Sam Kerr touches turns to goal these days.

The Australian striker scored a wonderful bicycle kick goal in Sky Blue FC’s home loss to the Orlando Pride June 28 and tallied the game-winner in a 1-0 victory at the first-place North Carolina Courage Saturday.

For her performances in those two National Women’s Soccer League games, Kerr Monday was named winner of the FrontRowSoccer.com player of the week and goal of the week. Those honors included games through Sunday.

Earning praise and honors is not anything new to Kerr this season. She has secured NWSL player of the month awards for May and June.

“It is great news to hear that Sam has won player of the month in back-to-back months,” Sky Blue head coach Christy Holly said last week. “This is fantastic recognition for all of the hard work and tremendous drive that she shows our team. Sam is constantly improving her own game as well as those players around her, and we are excited to see the next stage of her development within Sky Blue FC.”

Sam Kerr – NWSL Player of the Month

Congrats to Sky Blue FC forward Samantha Kerr, who is just the second player in league history to win NWSL Player of the Month honors in consecutive months!

Moreover, Kerr has been outstanding for Sky Blue FC this season.

A minute into the second half of the 3-2 defeat to Orlando last Wednesday, Kerr demonstrated why she is one of the best, if not the best NWSL player this season.

Daphne Corboz and Kerr produced a quick one-two before Corboz sent the ball down the left flank for an onrushing Maya Hayes. The New Jersey native ran towards the end line near the left post, centering a volley to Kerr. As the ball began to arrive, Kerr set her feet before firing a well-driven bicycle kick past goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe for a 2-1 edge.

On Saturday, Kerr waited a little longer to produce her magic — in the 84th minute.

Former Hofstra University standout Leah Galton was played into space on the left flank by Nikki Stanton. The England international moved around two defenders toward the end line. She sent a cross towards the near post to Hayes. Hayes flicked the ball to an open Kerr behind her. She one-timed the feed past goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland.

Sky Blue FC held on for a 1-0 win.

What an incredible effort from this team! Three games in less than a week, and Sky Blue FC has gone into WakeMed Soccer Park and taken three road points from the first-place North Carolina Courage.
