Red Bulls midfielder Mike Grella will miss the remainder of the Major League Soccer season.
The Glen Cove, N.Y. native will undergo surgery next week to address discomfort in his left knee.
A vital part of the 2015 Supporters Shield winners, Grella recorded nine goals and seven assists as the Red Bulls boasted arguably the most lethal and best midfield in the league.
He has missed most of this season while receiving treatment. Grella received treatment in March that caused him to miss all of April. He returned to the lineup as a sub against Philadelphia May 6.
Grella last played in the Red Bulls’ 1-0 win over New York City FC in the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup June 14.
His last league appearance and start was a 1-0 loss at the Montreal Impact June 3.
Grella has made eight appearances this season with no goals or assists.
The 30-year-old midfielder has made 73 regular-season appearances for the club, accruing 16 goals and 13 assists since signing in February 2015.
