Raquel Rodriquez helped set the pace in Sky Blue FC’s 3-1 win at Portland Thorns FC Saturday night by scoring 25 seconds into the National Women’s Soccer League match.

The goal tied a league record for the fastest goal in league history and subsequently was selected as the FrontRowSoccer.com goal of the week Monday.

Rodriguez was honored for the week ending Sunday, June 18.

Sky Blue FC wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, opening its account 25 seconds after kickoff. The visitors immediately went on the attack. Australian Sam Kerr gathered a rebound inside the penalty area before she played a hard roller towards Rodriguez at the box of the box. The Costa Rica international fired a shot past goalkeeper Adrianna Franch for a 1-0 lead.

Kerr added two goals as the Jersey side handed Portland its first home loss of the season.

“We are delighted with the result and exceptionally proud of every single player within this roster,” Sky Blue head coach Christy Holly said. “Everybody came together and pushed one another to fight it out to the very end. We know that there are better performances in us, but this is a fantastic stepping stone towards the huge goals that we have for ourselves.”

Third-place Sky Blue FC will visit the second-place Chicago Red Stars Sunday at 6 p.m. The New Jersey team will return home to Yurcak Field to host the Orlando Pride Wednesday, June 28 at 7 p.m.

Raquel Rodriguez Cedeño got the fun started early tonight, tying an NWSL record with the fastest goal in league history at 25 seconds.
