LAGRANGE, N.Y. — The Lynbrook/East Rockaway Screaming Eagles outlasted the Massapequa Hurricanes to capture the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Girls Under-16 State Open Cup title at Stringham Park June 4.

After playing to scoreless draw after regulation and extratime, the Screaming Eagles prevailed in the shootout, 4-2, to capture the Peter Masotto Cup.

Sarah Diluzio, Kailey Hyland, Katie Koran and Megan Sullivan converted their penalty kicks for the Screaming Eagles while goalkeeper Natalie Peralta had recorded a shutout.

“It was a great game to watch and an incredible game to coach,” Lynbrook/East Rockaway coach PJ O’Doherty said. “Thanks to Eastern New York for hosting us. It’s a great organization and we are proud to be a part of it.”

Lynbrook/East Rockaway will represent Eastern New York at the Region I tournament in Spotsylvania, Va. June 30-July 4.

Lynbrook/East Rockaway also received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials. The namesake of the award, who died last year, was inducted into the Halls of Fame of the Long Island Junior Soccer League and Eastern New York plus was honored as a U.S. Soccer Life Member. Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980.

The cup’s namesake, Peter Masotto, is a Region 1 Hall of Famer and U.S. Soccer Life Member who was president of ENYYSA from 1984-2006. The Babylon, N.Y. resident coached the Massapequa Falcons girls team to the 1988 …. national championship.
