CHICAGO – FC Kansas City forward Sydney Leroux was voted the National Women’s Soccer League player of the week by the NWSL Media Association Tuesday.

Leroux, 27, scored her second and third goals of the season to lead the Blues to a 3-2 home victory over the Washington Spirit as FC Kansas City extended its unbeaten run to four games and was undefeated in May.

The Surrey, British Columbia-born U.S. international got her team back on level terms in the ninth minute after receiving a pass from Brittany Ratcliffe and using her first touch to take her past the defender before sliding a left-footed shot past goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe. She fired the Blues back in front in the 27th minute after Shea Groom forced a turnover that enabled Leroux to run onto the ball and create the space for herself to smash a right-footed shot inside the near post.

The UCLA product played all 90 minutes against Washington and finished with a team-high five shots, three of which were on target, according to Opta.

The goals were the first for Leroux since opening day on April 16. She is the first Blues player to score twice in a game this season and the first since Groom netted a brace Sept. 7, 2016. The tallies were also the 19th and 20th of her NWSL career. Leroux is the 14th player in league history to reach the 20-goal milestone.

It is the fourth time Leroux has been honored as the NWSL player of the week – tied with Seattle Reign midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi for the second most all-time behind former Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn (6) – and the sixth time an FC Kansas City player has won the award. She previously earned the accolade for Week 4 and Week 13 of the 2013 NWSL season as well as Week 4 of the 2014 season.

FC Kansas City will return to action in the NWSL game of the week on Lifetime this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

The NWSL player of the week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
