ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A third Rochester Lancers team could become reality, perhaps within a month.
Prior to their home-opening doubleheader at Wegman’s Sports Complex Sunday, the Lancers addressed the issue briefly.
“We’re almost there,” Lancers men’s coach Doug Miller told the crowd while being interviewed by owner Soccer Sam Fantauzzo. “We’ve got another 30 days [to make a decision].”
With the Major Arena Soccer League ready to finalize its teams for the 2017-18 season, clubs, including the Lancers, must make a decision whether they will play in the fall.
The indoor Lancers played from 2011-2015, first in the Major Indoor Soccer League and then in the MASL. Miller performed with the team and coached the side during the 2014-15 season.
Workman’s compensation issues and playing at the high-rent Community War Memorial were two of the issues that forced Fantauzzo to shut down the indoor team.
The Dome in suburban Henrietta, N.Y has been under consideration as a possible home venue for the Lancers’ return.
In an April interview with FrontRowSoccer.com, MASL commissioner Josh Schaub acknowledged there was interest from the Lancers to return to the league.
“There have been talks. There has been a lot of talk,” he said. “Actually, Soccer Sam on his show has announced his intentions to come back to the Arena League. However, it has been well documented that Sam having workman’s compensation issues up there in that regard and trying to resolve those issues prior to being to come back.
“And we as league want to make sure that he can be financially viable before coming back. For him, dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s. There’s definitely interest and there’s definitely been conversations going on.”
On Sunday, the Lady Lancers made their home debut at WSC at Aquinas Institute, playing to a 1-1 draw with the New York Magic in United Women’s Soccer competition.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lancers men dropped a 2-1 decision to the Dayton Dynamo, losing in stoppage time in a National Premier Soccer League match.
