For the first time this season, a player captured player of the week for the second time.

New York City FC forward Rodney Wallace did the honors after his performance against Atlanta United SC at Yankee Stadium Sunday.

Within a minute’s span in the second half, the Costa Rican international scored the tie-breaking goal and set up the insurance tally in NYCFC’s 3-1 triumph. He also assisted on captain David Villa’s first-half goal.

Wallace was honored for the week ending Sunday, May 7. He also won the award in Week 3, on March 20.

What made Wallace’s second-half achievement more impressed was that he was denied three times within a six-second span in the opening minute of the second half. Atlanta cleared three of his shots off the goal line.

Some 15 minutes later, he came back to do some damage and turn the game on its head.

“Our objective was to go out and change things around and I think everyone responded accordingly,” Wallace said. “They did a great job of clearing the first one off the line. The rebound came to Maxi [Moralez] and I was able to follow up on a header. They cleared that. I had a volley and they cleared that off again. Credit to them. That set the tone for us to go out there and try to get the three points.”

Wallace led the charge. First, he touched an Ethan White feed, just in front of the net, for his third goal of the season on the hour.

“This is difficult for every soccer player,” Villa said. “When all the things are good, everybody plays good. You need to keep going when things are not good and Rodney is the example today. He missed the first chances, he didn’t go down and he start to have confidence and he scored after.”
