Javi Marquez, who tallied his first goal as a Cosmos in the team’s 1-1 home draw with Jacksonville Armada Saturday night, was named winner of the FrontRowSoccer.com goal of the week, it was announced Monday.

The veteran midfielder was honored for the week ending on Sunday, April 23.

After center back David Ochieng cleared the ball out of the attack third, he found Walter Restrepo. The veteran midfielder dribbled toward the penalty area and picked out Marquez, who fired a 16-yard shot with his left foot past goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell and into the lower right corner for a 1-0 advantage in the North American Soccer League match.

Teammate and striker Eugene Starikov was open on the other side of the field, but Marquez decided to shoot himself.

“Every time I get close to the box I have the goal right in front of me,” Marquez said. “It’s worth my virtures. Therefore, I’m confident about my abilities and if I can shoot, I’ll shoot.”

Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese praised the 30-year-old Spaniard’s play beyond the goal.

“He’s getting fitter, he’s getting to know the players,” he said. “He’s getting to know the league. I think now the quality is going to show. Tonight you saw him, a lot of very good things besides scoring the goal. He gave us a fluidity of play. He was finding spaces going forward and he’s a quality player. We’re glad he’s with us and we’re glad that now he’s being able to get into the shape to be able to contribute.”
