Goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer, who made eight saves — some of them spectacular — in the Cosmos’ 2-0 win at Miami FC Saturday night, was named the FrontRowSoccer.com player of the week Monday.

Maurer was honored for the week ending on Sunday, April 9.

He was magnificent in the match, stopping several key shots to keep the Cosmos in the game before Danny Szetela and Ayoze tallied second-half goals to boost the two-time defending North American Soccer League champions to their first victory of the spring season. They improved to 1-1-1 and

Among his most memorable saves:

Maurer denied the hosts twice within seconds in the 18th minute, first stopping Vincenzo Rennella and then former teammate Hunter Freeman on the rebound in a pair of bang-bang plays.

Less than a minute into the second half, Maurer saved Rennella’s effort from the right side and stopped Stefano Pinho on a 1 v 1 situation in the 49th minute.

He continued his stellar play into the 72nd minute, producing a diving save on Dylan Mares, who scored against the Cosmos last week.

Maurer was named the Cosmos’ man of the match in their 3-0 home-opening loss to Miami last week.

The Cosmos have a bye this week before hosting Jacksonville Armada at MCU Park Saturday, April 22.
