It was not a good night for New York-based soccer players performing in World Cup qualifiers for their respective teams Friday.
New York City FC’s Costa Rican dynamic duo of Ronald Matarrita and Rodney Wallace did not fare well as the Ticos went down to a 2-0 defeat to Mexico at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Matarrita started and went the full 90 minutes while Wallace did not play.
Javier Hernandez — aka Chicharito — tallied once for El Tri. He tied Jared Borgetti’s record as Mexico’s all-time leading scorer with 46 goals. Hernandez’s seventh-minute ended a personal 359-minute scoreless streak. Nestor Araujo also scored.
Red Bulls right back Michael Murillo came on in the 75th minute for Adolfo Machado in Panama’s 1-0 defeat to host Trinidad & Tobago in Port of Spain. Kevin Molino found the net for the Soca Warriors.
City midfielder Alex Ring started and played in Finland’s 2-0 loss to Turkey.
