PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In need of a victory on Wednesday night to secure a bye into the semifinals of the Big East men’s Championship, St. John’s University ran into an upstart Providence College squad that extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a scoreless draw at Chapey Field.

St. John’s, which secured the third seed in the tournament with the result, will host Creighton University in first round action in Queens Saturday at 6 p.m. Providence (5-7-5, 2-2-5) will head to Xavier in the other opening round matchup.

With a record of 5-2-2 in conference play, the Red Storm turned in its best mark in Big East action since 2009, when the Johnnies, fresh off a College Cup appearance in 2008, went 6-1-4 en route to their eighth league title.

Goalkeeper Andrew Withers led the way for the Red Storm (8-6-3, 5-2-2) on Wednesday night, making six saves and recording his eighth clean sheet of the campaign. Withers’ eight shutouts tie him for 10th on the St. John’s season record list in that category.

Saturday’s match against the Bluejays will be streamed live on the Big East Digital Network, available on FOXSportsGO.com and the FOX Sports GO app.
