A 9-year-old boy died Sunday after a soccer goal post fell on him while playing with his youth sports league, police said.
Tommaso Cerase was playing at a church youth event at Park West High School on W. 50th St. near 11th Ave. in the Hell’s Kitchen section of Manhattan at about 10 a.m.
There are varying reports as to what exactly transpired.
He ran into the pole and the goal fell on his, which caused severe head trauma, according to AM New York, police said.
According to the New York Daily News, Cerase was hanging off the goal post in an indoor gym before it fell on him.
EMS transported Cerase to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cerase lived on the Upper West Side.
The city medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of his death.
On his Facebook page, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tommaso’s death was “heartbreaking.”
“Our prayers are with his family,” he added.
In a statement, schools chancellor Carmen Farina said: “This tragic incident is heartbreaking and our thoughts are with this student’s family and school community during this devastating time.”
