QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s University women dropped a 1-0 decision to Long Beach State in a non-conference game at Belson Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Rocio Rodriguez converted the game’s lone goal in the 34th minute when she flicked in a cross from Kayla Cannon. Rodriguez, who was scratched from the starting lineup roughly 15 minutes prior to first kick, scored her second goal of the year.

With time winding down in the second half, the Red Storm earned a corner kick, but a Maia Cabrera header was blocked as Long Beach State was able to hold off the hosts.

The 49ers (6-3-1) outshot St. John’s (4-4-1), 13-4, and maintained possession throughout most of the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Antonia Tammaro, playing in her first game in front of the home crowd, made five saves. Cabrera led the Johnnies with two shots, while senior defender Mikhaila Martinov and junior midfielder Madeleine Watson each had one attempt.

St. John’s opens Big East play next Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m., when it travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown University.
