PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr is gunning for a record.
The next goal the Australian international scores will set a National Women’s Soccer League record for most the most in a season.
Kerr will have an opportunity to break the mark when Sky Blue FC (9-10-2, 26 points) hosts the Washington Spirit (4-13-4, 16) at Yurcak Field Sunday at 6 p.m.
She is level with Kim Little (2014) on 16 goals.
Sky Blue is still in the playoff hunt as well.
“We are going into Sunday with the expectation of getting three points,” Sky Blue FC assistant coach David Hodgson said. “We know the playoffs are still very much a possibility, so that is where we are focused. At the same time, we approach this game by giving Washington a lot of respect. They have beaten us twice this year, so we are looking to avenge that a bit. We had a good week of training, and our goal now is to come away with the three points on Sunday.”
This weekend marks the third and final meeting of the season between Sky Blue FC and Washington, with the Spirit coming up victorious in the previous two encounters. The first match was in April at the Maryland SoccerPlex in a 4-3 win for the hosts. The last pairing occurred in early August, with Sky Blue FC taking a 1-0 lead into halftime before Washington rallied for four second-half goals to claim a 4-1 victory.
Sky Blue FC leads the five-year head-to-head series over the Washington with a 7-6-2 record. The New Jersey side also holds a 4-3-0 edge at Yurcak Field.
