WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Sophomores Andy Martinez and Geoff Schaefer scored to boost the Monmouth University men to a 2-0 victory over the University of Pennsylvnia in their home opener Friday night.
Junior goalkeper Bobby Edwards made two saves for his second shutout of the season for the Hawks (2-1)
“I thought the guys put in a good shift tonight,” Monmouth head coach Robert McCourt said. “Penn is a very good team and well-coached. I think they’re going to win a lot of games this year, so we’re happy to get out of here with a good result. There was a lot of effort on both sides of the ball, so I was proud of the guys.”
In his 18th start, Martinez scored his first career goal to put Monmouth ahead in the 42nd minute. Dan Frisch-Harmon sent a long, bending ball to the far post to find Martinez, who volleyed it home. In his first career start, Frisch-Harmon picked up his first assist.
In the 53rd minute, Jake Areman played a similar bending far post ball that found the foot of Schaefer, who netted his third career goal. Areman leads the team with two assists on the season.
Monmouth will travel to No. 19 West Virginia on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
