NEW YORK – Senior Kristin Desmond scored the Hofstra Univeristy women’s first goal of the season en route to a 1-1 tie with Columbia University at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium Friday night.

Hofstra (0-2-1) had the first quality chance of the game, with Sabrina Bryan’s shot being saved on the goal line by a Columbia defender, but the Lions (0-0-1) struck first. Amaris Hemmings knocked in a shot from the right side off a header by Caroline Militello to give Columbia a 1-0 lead with 16:22 left in the first half.

After junior Sabrina Barton was taken down inside the 18-yard box, Desmond tucked the a penalty kick into the right side of the net past a diving Sophie Whitehouse to knot the score at 1-1 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.

Hofstra concludes its four-game road trip at Boston University Sunday at 4 p.m.
