CHICAGO – The second round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup provided a handful of “Cupsets” as local amateur qualifier Christos FC along with the Premier Development League trio of Chicago United FC, Michigan Bucks, and Reading United AC all took down professional sides to be among the 26 teams that advanced to the third round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Those third round matches are set for May 31, with the winners earning a fourth round date against a Division I, Major League Soccer side two weeks later.

Out east, Christos FC of Baltimore used a 79th minute goal from Geaton Caltabiano to down 1995 U.S. Open Cup champions Richmond Kickers 1-0 at City Stadium. In Pennsylvania, the PDL’s Reading United AC rode a stretch of three goals in six minutes to defeat two=-ime defending North American Soccer League champions, Cosmos 3-2.

The PDL’s Great Lakes’ sides collected more upsets, with U.S. Open Cup powerhouse Michigan Bucks using a first-half strike from Jordan Snell to see off the NASL’s 2016 Spring Champions Indy Eleven 1-0, while Chicago FC United joined them in the Third Round by scoring a 3-1 home victory against the United Soccer League’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

In the two all-amateur matches of the night, GPS Omens (Mass.) narrowly edged Boston City FC (Mass.) 2-1, while L.A. Wolves FC (Calif.) used Paolo Cardozo’s extra time penalty kick to outlast Chula Vista FC (Calif.) 1-0.

The third round pairs the 26 winners from the second round, with the victors advancing to take on Division I Major League Soccer clubs. The third round is made up of 20 Division II sides (16 from USL, four from NASL) and six Open Division clubs (three each from the PDL and local amateur qualifying).

U.S. Soccer will conduct the pairing process for the fourth round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on at Soccer House in Chicago Thursday.

The fourth round is scheduled to be played May 31.

Tampa Bay Rowdies (USL) 3, Jacksonville Armada U-23 (NPSL) 0

Missing a handful of their regular starters – including three-time FA Cup winner and skipper Joe Cole – the Rowdies were in firm control of the contest from the opening whistle. It took the home side just three minutes to open the scoring when Canadian Kyle Porter fizzed in a long, looping effort from out near the touchline, a few yards over the midfield stripe. It looked like Jacksonville’s goalkeeper Juan Fajardo back-peddled fast enough to keep the ball from going over the goal-line, but the referee pointed to the center-circle and the Rowdies were a goal to the good early on. They then kept possession of the ball for the vast majority of the first-half and it was no surprise when Michael Nanchoff picked Nurdin Hrustic’s pocket and worked himself a little space to hit home with his left foot from a tight angle in the dying moments of the opening period. The second goal of the game gave the USL side a well-deserved 2-0 lead at the break against their amateur opponents who failed to get much going in attack.
The Armada showed some pep early in the second-half, but it was little more than a false dawn. Their uphill climb became even steeper 20 minutes in when Dener Dos Santos was shown a straight red card for a tussle with Nanchoff on the touchline. Up a man and the better side even without the numerical superiority, the Rowdies took full advantage in what was left of the contest. In the 69th minute, stocky striker Martin Paterson made it 3-0 when he got on the end of a low Darwin Jones cross to hammer home from close range.

The 3-0 victory sees Tampa Bay move on to the Third Round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup, where they will meet the NASL’s Miami FC.

Wednesday, May 17
Atlanta Silverbacks (NPSL) 1, Charleston Battery (USL) 2

Charleston’s early pressure led to the game’s first goal 20 minutes in. After a foul at midfield, Ryan Arambula sent a well-placed free kick towards the left post where Forrest Lasso rose above his mark to head home his fifth of the season. A 43rd minute injury forced the goal scorer out of the match, but just a minute later Charleston bagged their second marker when Ricky Garbanzo crossed for Jeffery Otoo, who won the ball in the area before burying his first goal in a Battery shirt to take the USL side into the half up 2-0. Atlanta worked to pull back into the match and cut into Charleston lead when Alex Harlley converted a penalty in the 73rd minute, but the NPSL couldn’t find an equalizer. With the victory, Charleston has now won 12 straight tournament openers and advanced to at least the Third Round for the sixth consecutive time. They’ll next pay a visit to Jacksonville Armada in the Third Round.
Richmond Kickers (USL) 0, Christos FC (Md.) 1
A tidy performance from Christos FC saw the amateur side advance to the Third Round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup at the expense of professional USL side Richmond Kickers thanks to Geaton Caltabiano’s winning strike late in the second half. The Kickers opened the first half on the front foot but found the hard-working Christos side difficult to break down. The teams reached the midway point tied 0-0, and in the second half, the Kickers upped their pressure, hitting the crossbar in the 74th minute before seeing another attempt cleared off the line. Five minutes later, the well-organized Christos defense won a turnover near midfield and got out on a 3v2 break. Brian Graham carried the ball forward and put Caltabiano in on goal as the Christos players neared the top of the box. From a wide angle to the right of goal, Caltabiano beat Kickers ‘keeper Marcel DeBellis with a low shot in the 80th minute to set Christos FC up with a Third Round matchup against PDL side Chicago FC United.

Rochester Rhinos (USL) 3, FC Motown (N.J.) 0
Two minutes is all it took for the Rhinos to get all the offense they would need on the night. In his first match of 2017, Sofiane Tergou played a slick one-two with Jochen Graf and beat the goalkeeper near post. Six minutes later, Rochester struck again, this time with Graf finding the back of net. Jalen Brown delivered the cross to Graf, who nutmegged the goalkeeper to double the Rhinos’ lead. Rayane Boukemia put the icing on the proverbial cake in the 85th minute when he fired home the rebound of an Antonio Correia shot. The Rhinos, the last non-MLS side to win the U.S. Open Cup back in 1999, will host the GPS Omens in the Third Round.

Boston City FC (Mass.) 1, GPS Omens (Mass.) 2
GPS Omens took down cross-town rival Boston City FC 2-1 at Della Russo Stadium on Wednesday night. GPS’ Keith Caldwell opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a curling shot from the top of the box. The visitors doubled their lead in the 60th minute when Charles Romero finished with a diving header. Boston City forward Jhonata Batista dented the score with a low blast past the ‘keeper with 15 minutes to play, but the comeback fell short. GPS goes on the road for a Third Round date at Rochester Rhinos.

Miami United FC (NPSL) 1, Jacksonville Armada (NASL) 2
Hosting their second-straight Open Cup match, the amateur side ran out to a dream lead in the 31st minute when captain Ezequiel Tejera lobbed a ball into the path of Jacopo Capilli. The Miami United forward controlled before hitting a perfectly-weighted effort that beat Armada ‘keeper Kyle Nasta. The lead was short-lived however as Aaron Pitchkolan took advantage of a bobbled corner kick and cleaned up the rebound in the 35th. The pro side then jumped ahead seven minutes last as Jack Blake powered his penalty kick into the top of the net. A physical second half saw Miami United give the NASL side a good run, but come up shorthanded as Jacksonville advanced to a Third Round home date against the USL’s Charleston Battery.

Carolina Dynamo (PDL) 1, North Carolina FC (NASL) 6
North Carolina FC cruised to the Third Round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup with a 6-1 win against fellow Tar Heel State side Carolina Dynamo. NCFC jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime with Brian Shriver, Matt Fondy and Tiyi Shipalane all finding the back of the net. The second half saw more of the same as Jordan Orlando, who also assisted on Fondy’s goal, saw his 57th minute strike bisect a brace from Billy Schuler – his goals coming in the 47th and 85th minutes. The Dynamo goal came courtesy of Justin Shear in the 74th minute. With the six-goal haul tying a club record for goals scored in an Open Cup game, North Carolina FC (formerly Carolina RailHawks) secure a Third Round date against USL club Charlotte Independence.

Charlotte Eagles (PDL) 2, Charlotte Independence (USL) 3
The Charlotte Independence proved royal in the Queen City Derby in the Second Round of the U.S. Open Cup for the second year in a row, this time with a 3-2 comeback win against the Charlotte Eagles. The victors registered the game’s first goal in the ninth minute when Casey Townsend tapped in a failed clearance. The Eagles nabbed two goals in a span of two minutes, first when Ryan Williams traveled from midfield and scored on a right-footed shot from the top of the box, and again when Kelvin Omondi cut inside across the top of the area and bent a shot inside the far post in the 63rd minute. Trailing 2-1, Independence midfielder Enzo Martinez earned a penalty, which he converted with a low shot to even the score in the 77th minute. Eleven minutes later, Martinez tallied again with a right-footed shot across the face of the goal and into the side netting. The win sets up another local rivalry clash, as Charlotte Independence go on the road to face NASL side North Carolina FC in the Third Round.

Tartan Devils Oak Avalon (Pa.) 0, Louisville City FC (USL) 9
Tartan Devils Oak Avalon got off to an unhallowed start against Louisville City FC when LouCity’s Ilija Ilic’s effort caromed off the post and off the Tartan goalkeeper and in for an eighth-minute own goal. Louisville poured on the pressure and overwhelmed their amateur hosts, scoring eight more goals from seven different players. Mark-Anthony Kaye, Richard Ballard, Ilic, Cameron Lancaster (twice), Sean Totsch, Oscar Jimenez, and Guy Abend all found the scoresheet for the visitors. Louisville City advances to the Third Round where they’ll visit fellow USL side FC Cincinnati.

FC Cincinnati (USL) 1, AFC Cleveland (NPSL) 0 (a.e.t.)
A defensive struggle saw the two sides play nearly two hours of back-and-forth soccer before the underdogs finally conceded. With penalties looming, Djiby Fall broke the deadlock by heading Andrew Wiedeman’s cross to the back post. Before the game-winning strike, Cleveland goalkeeper Alex Ivanov had turned away 15 shots on goal. Dallas Jaye turned in the clean sheet for the home side by stopping three shots. Cincinnati’s reward for outlasting the NPSL foe is a date with Louisville City FC in the Third Round.

Reading United AC (PDL) 3, New York Cosmos (NASL) 2
Cosmos ran out to an early lead when Javi Marquez penetrated the box before laying off for Kalif Alhassan who smartly finished inside the right post in the 11th minute. Reading United bounced back with a three-goal flurry before halftime. In the 38th minute, Paul Marie got on the end of a clever through ball to slot past Jimmy Maurer. Marco Micaletto gave the home side a 2-1 advantage in the 41st minute before a high press from Frantzdy Pierrot forced a turnover at the back and allowed the Reading United striker a clean path to goal to make it 3-1 in the 44th. The Cosmos went back on the front foot in the second half and pulled within a goal when Alhassan’s bullet cross found Danny Szetela, whose diving header found its way to the back of the net in the 63rd minute. Continued pressure came to no avail as Reading United closed out an impressive Cupset against the defending NASL champions, earning a Third Round date with fellow Pennsylvania side Harrisburg City Islanders.

Miami FC (NASL) 3, South Florida Surf (PDL) 2
Two ties and two lead changes highlighted this wild affair between clubs separated by just 90 miles of coast line. The Surf jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage on Honduras U-20 international Darwin Espinal’s 20th minute goal. Trailing at the half, Miami responded three minutes after the break when Kwadwo Poku headed home the equalizer off a Blake Smith cross. The momentum carried the home side to a second goal 12 minutes later as halftime substitute Dylan Mares played in a cross that ended in an own goal. South Florida leveled things in the 74th on a Jeff Michaud strike, but Miami buried the game-winner five minutes later via a Jaime Chávez header. Alessandro Nesta’s squad now advances to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Third Round.

Michigan Bucks (PDL) 1, Indy Eleven (NASL) 0
Playing in the comfortable, indoor combines of Ultimate Soccer Arenas, perennial U.S. Open Cup power Michigan Bucks survived an early scare when David Goldsmith rattled an effort off the crossbar before Justin Braun’s follow-up effort was kept out by Drew Shepherd. The Bucks survived that early pressure and got the game’s only goal in the 31st minute when Jordan Snell slipped Francis Atuahene up the right, where the Ghanaian sneaked a near-post effort past Keith Cardona to take a 1-0 halftime lead. On the other side of the break Atuahene nearly doubled the advantage, but saw his breakaway attempt well saved by Cardona. In the end, Indy couldn’t muster an equalizing goal as the Bucks continued their Cupsetting ways with a 1-0 defeat of the Division II side. Michigan advances to the Third Round for the sixth time in club history where they’ll meet Saint Louis FC.

Ocean City Nor’easters (PDL) 0, Harrisburg City Islanders (USL) 0 (6-7 PKs)
Following 120 minutes of scoreless play, the Harrisburg City Islanders topped the Ocean City Nor’easters 7-6 in penalty kicks at the Beach House. The Islanders’ Pedro Ribiero misfired on the team’s first attempt in penalties, giving Ocean City an early advantage. With pressure mounting, Harrisburg City’s Brandon Miller made a crucial stop in the fourth round of the shootout on Fraser Colmer’s try. A Nor’easters miss in the eighth round set the Islanders up for the win when Mouhamed Dabo calmly finished his spot kick. Harrisburg moves on to a Third Round date with the PDL’s Reading United AC.

Chicago FC United (PDL) 3, Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL) 1
Chicago FC United continued its maiden U.S. Open Cup run by taking down the professional Pittsburgh Riverhounds 3-1 on Wednesday night. Chicago got out to a 1-0 lead when Mike Catalano set up Mark Segbres in the 18th minute. Kay Banjo pulled the USL side level on the hour mark, but Tom Barlow gave FC United a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute. Ryan Sierakowski added an insurance marker just before full time, giving the PDL team a Third Round home date with fellow amateur side Christos FC.

FC Wichita (NPSL) 3, Saint Louis FC (USL) 4 (a.e.t.)
Saint Louis FC hailed as victors in an intense back-and-forth game chock full of second-half action against nearby foe FC Wichita, winning 4-3 after extra time. Wichita took its first of three leads in the sixth minute when Leonardo Sosa buried a penalty kick past the diving ‘keeper. Saint Louis leveled with an Alec Cochran header in the 33rd minute, sending the game to the half tied 1-1. Wichita and Saint Louis traded goals in the 61st and 71st minutes, respectively, but the second-half excitement had just begun.

Nineteen-year-old Deri Corfe scored a stunner from distance in the 81st minute, putting Wichita ahead 3-2 with limited time left in regulation. Doing all they could to maintain their lead, Wichita’s Colton Haskin was sent off with a straight red card for preventing a goal in stoppage time, but Saint Louis’ penalty attempt sailed over the crossbar. Possessing a man-advantage, the visitors notched an equalizer thanks to a Tyler David header five minutes into stoppage time. Saint Louis’ Jose Angulo gave his side its first lead of the game with a shot from distance four minutes into extra time, proving to be the difference after 120 minutes of play. Led by former U.S. international Preki, Saint Louis FC will visit the PDL’s Michigan Bucks in the Third Round.

Dutch Lions FC (NPSL) 1, San Antonio FC (USL) 2
San Antonio FC journeyed down Interstate-10 for a Second Round match at Dutch Lions FC. Victor Aruajo’s free kick goal opened the scoring for SAFC in the 17th minute and Aly Alberto Hassan’s solo effort doubled the lead before halftime. The hosts came out strong in the second and got a goal back in the 62nd minute when Nathaniel Coons pounced on a loose clearance. Dutch Lions pushed for a late equalizer but San Antonio closed the match strong to hold on for the 2-1 victory. San Antonio will play USL rival Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the Third Round.

Tulsa Roughnecks FC (USL) 5, OKC Energy U-23 (PDL) 3
The OKC Energy U-23s took after their namesake with a second-half burst, but it was too little too late in a 5-3 loss to Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the Second Round. Tulsa stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the first half with goals from Jaime Ayala Jain, Cristian Mata, and Pavel Kondrakhin, all from inside the box. Mata, a Tulsa native, completed his brace early in the second half, minutes before Kondrakhin did the same in the 53rd minute. Facing a 5-0 deficit, OKC faced an uphill battle, but found its way on the board in the 58th minute when Mark Lindstrom finished a cross from the corner. The Energy continued the comeback with an own goal in the 64th minute and a Christian Okeke right-footed tally in the 73rd minute. Tulsa moves on to host fellow USL side San Antonio FC in the Third Round.

OKC Energy FC (USL) 5, Moreno Valley Fútbol Club (Calif.) 1
The match started off so promising for Moreno Valley. An Edgar Gonzalez goal in the eighth minute, his first with the club, put the visitors on top and beaming with confidence. Ten minutes later, however, Alex Dixon equalized on a give-and-go with Luis Martinez. The two sides entered the locker room level, but it was all OKC in the second half. In a span of six minutes, Energy FC found the back of the net four times to open the floodgates and put the game out of reach. Dixon, Wojciech Wojcik, Andy Craven and Miguel Gonzalez were the goal-scorers for OKC, which moves on to face the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the Third Round.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL) 2, FC Tucson (PDL) 0
Switchbacks FC controlled most of the first half, but couldn’t find the back of the net until early in the second. Coming out of the locker room, Korean attacker Jun Gyeong Park put Switchbacks FC ahead in the 46th minute before Jamaican forward Kevaughn Frater doubled the advantage in the 48th. The win sets up another home date for Switchbacks FC when they welcome OKC Energy FC in the Third Round.

Fresno Fuego (PDL) 1, Phoenix Rising FC (USL) 3
Playing without big-name stars Didier Drogba and Shaun Wright-Phillips, Phoenix rose to the occasion on the road in Northern California. Kody Wakasa opened the scoring in the 33rd minute by outjumping the defense on a corner kick and burying a header into the back of the net. Just two minutes later, Eric Avila put the finishing touches on a beautiful buildup through the middle of the field with a strike at the face of goal. Mike Seth provided the assist, and later scored himself in the 54th minute to put the visitors ahead 3-0. Felipe Sousa clawed one back for Fresno in the 59th, but the comeback attempt fell short of taking real shape. Phoenix will face another Northern California foe in the Third Round when it takes on the San Francisco Deltas.

FC Golden State Force (PDL) 2, Orange County SC (USL) 5
The goals came quick for Orange County SC, who rode Victor Pineda’s sixth minute strike and Monday Etim’s 15th minute marker to an early 2-0 lead. FC Golden State struck back from the penalty spot in the 25th, but Jerry Van Ewijk restored Orange County SC’s two-goal lead with a spot kick of his own a minute later. The goals kept coming after halftime when Orange County’s Wuilito Fernandes half volley gave the USL side a three-goal lead, only to see it taken back a minute later by FC Golden State’s Mark Verso. Fernandes took things to 5-2 when he slotted his second of the game home in the 55th minute, but Orange County would have to play out the final 18 minutes with 10 men after Saloman Wbias was shown a red card. The USL side moves on to a Third Round date with L.A. Wolves FC.

L.A. Wolves FC (Calif.) 1, Chula Vista FC (Calif.) 0 (a.e.t.)
Eric Wynalda’s L.A. Wolves earned their second consecutive victory, this one requiring extra time in a 1-0 win against Chula Vista FC. The visitors’ strong possession caused the Wolves to be aggressive, leading to three cautions through 90 minutes of play. Paolo Cardozo, a 2011 M.L.S. first-round pick by the LA Galaxy, notched the game’s lone goal when he converted a penalty in the 104th minute to secure a spot in the Third Round where they’ll meet Orange County SC.

Sacramento Republic FC (USL) 4, vs. Anahuac FC (Nev.) 0
A confident display by Sacramento Republic FC saw the pro club ease past amateurs Anahuac FC 4-0 in the Second Round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup. An early double by Harry Williams put Sacramento up 2-0 by the 15th minute. Although Anahuac conjured a couple moments of danger, Sacramento largely controlled the game after taking the lead and extended its advantage midway through the second half via a Wilson Kneeshaw penalty kick. Daniel Trickett capped proceedings in the 85th minute with a volley from the top of the box. Sacramento moves on to face Reno 1868 in the Third Round.

San Francisco Deltas (NASL) 2, vs. Burlingame Dragons (PDL) 1
A battle of the Bay Area sides played out on neutral turf in Palo Alto on the campus of Stanford University. The underdogs from the east side of the Bay Bridge jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the 29th minute when Jamael Cox sent a tidy finish past the outstretched arms of San Francisco goalkeeper Steward Ceus. The Dragons carried their slim lead into the locker room, but the Deltas equalized seconds after play resumed on a flick from Reiner Ferreira off a Kyle Bekker free kick. San Francisco completed the rally in the 63rd minute as Tommy Heinemann deposited his first touch of the evening into the back of the net. The referee crew briefly conferred about a potential offside call, but the goal stood. The Deltas move on to the Third Round for a tilt against Phoenix Rising FC.

OSA FC (NPSL) 1, Reno 1868 FC (USL) 1 (3-4 PKs)
Ninety minutes wasn’t enough to determine a winner in this tilt from the Pacific Northwest. Eli Gordley put the home team on the board first in the 17th minute before Dembakwi Yomba leveled the score for Reno in the 29th. Cameron Vickers found the striker alone at the top of the box for the goal. Reno hit the crossbar multiple times in the dying minutes of regulation but was unable to find the breakthrough in the first 90. Following another 30 minutes of scoreless action, the match went to penalties. Reno goalkeeper Russell Klabough made a pair of clutch saves and Junior Burgos sent home the winner to lift the visitors to a dramatic victory. Reno 1868 will face Sacramento Republic FC in the Third Round.
